Many people will say NO! Believers cannot have demons. They say that "light cannot dwell with darkness". This belief is not actually based on biblical teachings, they are incorrectly using 2 Corinthians 6:14 to argue this point, but doing this is groundless because the scripture has a different meaning altogether.

2 Corinthians 6:14
Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
The scripture in context is asking what communion or partnership light can have with darkness, this is tackling the question of whether Christians should socialise with unbelievers nor not, a completely different topic. It has nothing to do with demons.
The answer is actually YES! Christians can, and do, have demons (as well as unbelievers). At some point they will need to have them cast out. If you study the bible correctly, and in context, you will find that it shows us clearly that deliverance is meant for Elohim's children, not for the unsaved.

Where demons do their work:
Demons cannot touch the spirit of a person after they have accepted Yeshua into their heart, where demons actually do their work is in the soul (or the "mind"). How do you see demons affecting people in the Bible? Through their mind! Like the lunatic boy and the man with "legion"(many demons). They also afflicted their physical bodies, like the woman with the spirit of infirmity who had the "issue of blood" and the man who was mute because of a demon. Demons can try to get our spirits worn out, or tempt us to sin, but their way of operating in our lives is through our minds (souls) and by troubling our physical bodies.
So we can see a Christian can be OPPRESSED ( afflicted or tormented) by a demon but never POSSESSED ( completely controlled by an evil spirit) by a demon.

The question is often asked. How can a demon indwell the same body at the same time as the Holy Spirit?
Firstly, we should understand what our spirit is. The Greek word for spirit  in the New Testament is pneuma meaning (to breathe, blow ),  the spirit is that part of a person which has the ability to grasp and perceive spiritual things

1 Corinthians 2:14

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of Elohim: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The word for soul in Greek is psyche meaning ( the centre of thought, feeling, and motivation).  This word defines the self life - the emotions, the intellect and the will. Paul shows us that a person is a three-fold being.

1 Thessalonians  5:23
And the very Elohim of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray Elohim your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of Yeshua Christ.
Scripture teaches that before salvation a man is dead in trespasses and sins...

Ephesians 2:1
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
Yeshua comes and indwells the human spirit and brings in His life

I John 5:11-12
And this is the record, that Elohim hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of Elohim hath not life.

Yeshua has made adequate provision for the whole man, but part of the responsibility now rests with us as is shown in Philippians...

Philippians 2-13:15
For it is Elohim which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
Do all things without murmurings and disputings:
That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of Elohim, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

The Greek word for salvation here is soteria.  meaning ( deliverance from the molestation of enemies). So this tells us that Yeshua has delivered our SPIRIT from the power of Satan; now He tells Christians to work out their deliverance from the molestation of enemies until they have freed both  SOUL AND BODY.

Demons almost always have legal grounds in a person's life, usually rooted in either the person's sins, or the sins of their ancestors. Before you can successfully cast a demon out of them, that legal right must first be broken or removed.
The reason trying to cast a demon out of an unbeliever is wrong is because even if you did succeed, they would come back with several more even worse evil spirits, this is because the unbeliever does not have the Holy Spirit in them and will be unable to keep them out! Yeshua warns about this in Matthew...

Matthew 12:43-45
When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.
Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.
Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

Yeshua referred to deliverance as children's bread. This is not for unbelievers, this is for believers!

Matthew 15:26
But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs.

Ways Christians Can Open Doors For Demons To Enter Their Body
Generational curses
A generational curse is a spiritual bondage, or curse, that is passed down from one generation to the next. Demons enter into a person while they are still in their mother’s womb. The word of Elohim clearly tells us that a family can be cursed for several generations.
Demons have a right to enter the unborn babies of parents that are under curses or a parents who is in sin. It is through the demons that curses are transmitted from generation to generation. The Bible mentions generational curses in a few places...

Exodus 20:3-5
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I YHWH thy Elohim am a jealous Elohim, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

Exodus 34:7
Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
Numbers 14:18
YHWH is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
The effects of sin are naturally passed down from one generation to the next. When a father or mother (or both) have a sinful lifestyle, their children are likely to practise that same sinful lifestyle, like the warning in Exodus 20:5. A Jewish Targum specifies that this passage refers to “ungodly fathers” and “rebellious children.” So, it is not unjust for Elohim to punish sin to the third or fourth generation, those generations are committing the same sins their ancestors did.

THE CURE
The cure for a generational curse is repentance. When Israel turned from idols to serve the living Elohim, the “curse” was broken and Elohim saved them.

Judges 3:9
And when the children of Israel cried unto YHWH, YHWH raised up a deliverer to the children of Israel, who delivered them, even Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother.
Judges 3:15
But when the children of Israel cried unto YHWH, the Lord raised them up a deliverer, Ehud the son of Gera, a Benjamite, a man lefthanded: and by him the children of Israel sent a present unto Eglon the king of Moab.
1 Samuel 12:10-11
And they cried unto YHWH, and said, We have sinned, because we have forsaken YHWH, and have served Baalim and Ashtaroth: but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve thee.
So as we see, Elohim promised to visit Israel’s sin upon the third and fourth generations, but in the very next verse He promised that He would show love to a thousand generations of those who loved Him and keep His commandments.
For a Christian who is worried about a generational curse, the answer to this issue is salvation through Yeshua Christ. After repentance and renouncing the sin the weaker demons may leave, however, stronger demons may refuse to leave and deliverance will be necessary.

Mark 9:29
And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.
There are many ways a demon can enter a person through sin. Drugs, drinking, smoking, being involved in the occult, sinful movies, tv shows, video games, music, hedonistic lifestyles, sexual perversions, bitterness, unforgiveness, etc.
